PARIS - (old Montmartre), “le Maquis”
Late nineteenth century, on the northern slopes of Montmartre, there is a vast wasteland called “the Maquis”. Many huts made of wood or hard there have gradually built. Even if it looks like a slum today, it’s not quite the case because there are also small farms, gardens and even a “castle” (the Castle of Mist) which housed the Renoir family. He saw a whole population of the world Montmartre very typical of the era: rag and miserable, Apaches, but bohemians and artists, painters, marginal of any kind, etc.. It was destroyed in 1910 so that is pierced Avenue Junot.
